What We Do

We provide Innovation-as-a-Service (IaaS), which is a fancy way of saying that we are a fee-for-service R&D team that can develop your ideas into products, or answer critical questions in business (and life).

Why We Do It?

The world is changing fast due to new technologies that leverage data, e.g., machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, internet of things, (insert your own buzzword here), …. The Googles and Amazons of the world are making hay, they have invested billions to build big teams of smart people that can do crazy things. However, SMEs are ‘priced out’, as the smart folks need to work in cross-functional teams, and building such teams cost a lot of $$. Our IaaS lowers the barrier to entry – we are a group of smart people (at least we think so) who are available “for hire”. Mercenaries. Sell-swords. Whatever you call us – our job is to turn your ideas into products, or answer critical questions that require a lot of thought-provoking, mind-numbing, fist-clenching work.

Our (Not so secret) Sauce

We are based in the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University. Here, we tap into the wide “intellectual wealth” of the University community – there is always someone around who knows a lot, about pretty much everything. We also tap into the high energy of some of Canada’s most advanced engineering students and researchers. These are packaged into a fast-paced service offering made possible by a dedicated and friendly staff.

Compliant with industry standards, here is our oversimplified infographic on how this works:

How Does it work

Typical projects run anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months, and may span many different technologies and application areas.

However, CIRC’s core strength is in leveraging data, e.g., algorithm development, image recognition, data fusion, machine learning, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence.

The usual steps are

For Who?

The IaaS service is designed for ambitious emerging companies, or SMEs, or large companies that can’t solve some of these problems on their own as they don’t have the kind of smart people needed to do so, or just too busy to do this on their own.

Alright, alright...what's the damage?

We are a not-for-profit, obviously, being a part of a major Canadian research University. However, our operations are not publicly funded but sustained by our friendly cost-recovery chargeout rates.

Typically, for projects < $100,000, we invoice 50% on signing, and 50% on completion. For larger projects, we establish invoice trigger points based on milestones.

All projects are fixed fee in nature unless we say so in the beginning; we use the hourly rates purely to calculate the cost to you.

Does it really work?

We are pretty young — we have been doing this for less than 2 years now. However, within that span, we have signed on a few happy clients.
